Google Chrome update: How to access apps and recently closed tabs

Today, Google rolled out a Chrome update that not only relocates that useful option, but also simplifies the browser's new-tab interface.<a href="http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2013/09/chrome-other-apps-shortcut-100055687-orig.jpg" style="color:rgb(37,167,215)" target="_blank"><img alt="" border="0" height="430" src="http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2013/09/chrome-other-apps-shortcut-100055687-medium.jpg" style="border-width:0px;vertical-align:middle;width:auto;min-height:auto;max-width:100%;float:left" width="300"></a> Let's take a look. In the past, when you opened a new tab (either by pressingCtrl-T or clicking the new-tab button), you'd see one of two pages: a collection of Chrome apps or a bunch of thumbnails for your most-visited sites. That was kind of a hassle, having to switch between the two. Now, everything is accessible from a single, more unified, page. Specifically, when you open a new tab, you'll see the Google Search bar. Below that, your most-visited sites, again in thumbnail form.As for apps, you can access them by clicking in either of two places. The first is the newly added apps shortcut that was added to your bookmarks bar. (If you don't use that bar, obviously you won't see it.) Clicking that shortcut reveals the old apps screen you're familiar with. However, if you merely want quick access to Google apps (Maps, YouTube, Gmail, etc.), you can click the little apps shortcut in the top-right corner of the new-tab page. That reveals a pop-down menu with nine of the most popular Google apps, with others available by clicking More. <a href="http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2013/09/chrome-recently-closed-100055686-orig.jpg" style="color:rgb(68,68,68);outline:0px" target="_blank"><img alt="" border="0" height="293" src="http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2013/09/chrome-recently-closed-100055686-medium.jpg" style="border-width:0px;vertical-align:middle;width:auto;min-height:auto;max-width:100%;float:left" width="300"></a> Finally, Chrome's "Recently closed" menu, which used to reside in the bottom-right corner of the new-tab window, has been relocated to the Chrome menu--the little three-line icon at the far right of the address bar. Click it, then mouse over Recent Tabsfor a fly-out menu with your recently closed tabs and tabs from other devices. I'm not sure this is more convenient than the old setup, but it does make for a more unified, less scattered interface--and that I like.

Organize your Chrome tabs vertically with Veritabs

<h1 itemprop="name" style="font-family:facitweb,sans-serif;margin:0px 0px 12px;line-height:1.13;color:rgb(34,34,34);font-size:25px;font-weight:500">Months ago I told you about <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/2031951/reduce-tab-clutter-in-chrome-with-onetab.html" style="line-height:1.7em;font-family:'Helvetica Neue',Arial,sans-serif;font-size:15px;color:rgb(37,167,215)">OneTab</a>, a nifty Chrome add-on that sucks up all your open tabs into a single one, thus reducing tab clutter and, theoretically, improving Chrome's performance. (The more open tabs you have, the slower any browser will be.) </h1>I still use OneTab, but recently I discovered another interesting tab organizer: <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/veritabs/nehjgjnfanppoiaikadimdkobpdahnmg?hl=en" style="color:rgb(37,167,215)">Veritabs</a>. This one is so head-smackingly obvious, I can't believe it's not built into every browser. Once Veritabs is installed, it presents all your open tabs (not bookmarks, mind you) in a vertical list on the left side of the screen. Or, at least, that's what it's supposed to. I assumed it worked like OneTab in that you'd click the Veritabs icon (which gets added to Chrome's extensions toolbar) to reveal the list. Nope. What happens is you move your mouse to the left side of the screen. That produces the Veritabs list; now just click any tab you want to switch to.<a class="zoom cboxElement" href="http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2013/09/veritabs-large-100052975-orig.jpg" style="color:rgb(37,167,215)"><img alt="" border="0" height="371" src="http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2013/09/veritabs-large-100052975-large.jpg" style="box-sizing: border-box; border-width: 0px; vertical-align: middle; width: auto; height: auto; max-width: 100%; float: left;" width="580"></a>Veritabs for Google Chrome. You can also resize this disappearing sidebar by clicking and dragging the handle in the upper-right corner, keep it visible by clicking the icon in the upper-left corner, or change the view to favicons only by clicking the icon in the lower-right corner. The extension does have a few bugs. On my system, the formatting of the list seemed to get messed up if I clicked certain tabs (probably owing to font-size differences within those tabs). And occasionally the Veritabs sidebar failed to disappear when I moused away from it. That said, although it doesn't really reduce tab clutter, and definitely doesn't help with performance, Veritabs does give you a much neater way to browse and navigate your open tabs. And it's especially nice to have when you're working in full-screen mode.
