Getting to Know Photoshop's JPEG File Format

<h1 style="margin:0.25rem 0px;padding:0px 0px 0.5rem;border-width:0px 0px 1px;border-bottom-style:solid;border-bottom-color:rgb(204,204,204);color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif"> </h1> Photoshop supports the JPEG (pronounced jay peg and short for Joint Photographic Experts Group) format. The JPEG format uses lossy compression. Lossy is the computer nerd's way of saying that stuff is lost during the compression process — namely, some of the data that makes up your image. The good news, however, is that you probably won't miss what's not around anymore — sort of like when you were a kid and you "lost" your little brother at the park. You may notice a slight difference in your on-screen image after you save the file using JPEG, but when the image is printed, the compression is usually undetectable. JPEG compression saves you lots of disk space. In fact, a JPEG image takes up less space on disk than a compressed TIFF file — half as much space, maybe a tenth as much, depending on your settings. Although JPEG isn't supported by as many programs as TIFF, it's becoming more and more common. JPEG compression works well with continuous tone images, such as photographs. <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"> <tbody><tr><td valign="top" width="60"><img align="left" alt="icon" src="http://media.wiley.com/assets/0/27/tip.gif" style="vertical-align: bottom; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; max-width: 100%; height: auto !important;"></td> <td valign="top">So should you use JPEG or TIFF? Here's a thought: Save in TIFF when excellent print quality is vital — for example, in high-resolution printing — or when you're editing an image. Then when you think you're finished editing and you want to conserve space, save in JPEG at the Maximum setting. You generally won't see the results of JPEG right away. But editing an image can bring out its weaknesses, and JPEG definitely weakens an image. So, going to JPEG after you finish editing is usually best. </td></tr></tbody></table> Also, if you want to distribute your image on the World Wide Web, you have to save it in either the JPEG, GIF, or the new and not yet widely supported PNG format. JPEG works well with photographic images, especially people, where there is a wide range of colors. TIFF isn't an option for Web publishing. When you choose the JPEG option in the Save As dialog box and press Enter (Return on the Mac), the dialog box shown in Figure 1 appears. The higher the image quality, the less the file is compressed and the more space it takes on disk.</li> </ul> <ul class="ul" style="padding:0px 1rem;margin:0px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"><li>The Quality option box and the slider bar beneath the box give you other ways to choose your compression setting. The slider bar and option box give you access to 13 settings (0 through 12), whereas the pop-up menu gives you access to only four. But, unless you're a real control freak, you can just select one of the pop-up menu options.</li> </ul> <ul class="ul" style="padding:0px 1rem;margin:0px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"><li>Choose the Maximum or High option from the Quality pop-up menu. During a single edit session, this compression won't hurt because JPEG works from the on-screen version. But, if you close, reopen, and resave it in JPEG format, some damage, albeit small, occurs. Repeat this process over and over, however, and the damage increases each time. Some advice — apply all your necessary edits to the image, save in JPEG format, and leave well enough alone. If you need to edit an image over a longer length of time, save it in a native Photoshop format. Then save it as a JPEG only after you have completed your editing process. </td></tr></tbody></table>

Making Your First Movie with Adobe Premiere Elements

If you have a digital camcorder handy with some video already recorded on the tape, and you have installed Adobe Premiere Elements on your computer, you're ready to start making movies. </h1><h2 style="margin:0.25rem 0px 1.25rem;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:18px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">Starting your first project</h2> Your first step is perhaps the most obvious one. Launch Premiere Elements, and when the welcome screen appears, click New Project. Type a name for your project in the New Project dialog box — any old name will do, as long as it's something you will remember later — and click OK. Premiere Elements creates your project and opens to the basic Premiere Elements screen. Wasn't that easy? <h2 style="margin:0.25rem 0px 1.25rem;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:18px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">Capturing video</h2> After you've created a new project in Premiere Elements, you need some source footage to work with. For now, assume you have a digital camcorder and you've already recorded some video that you want to edit. The process of getting video from the camcorder into your computer is called capturing. To capture some video, follow these steps: 1. Connect your digital camcorder to your computer's FireWire (IEEE-1394) port. Premiere Elements can capture video only from a digital camcorder connected to a FireWire port; if you have an older analog camcorder, you'll need to use special analog video capture hardware and probably some different video capture software. 2. Turn the Camcorder on to VTR or Player mode. If Windows automatically opens a window stating that a digital video device was detected, click Cancel to close the window. 3. In the toolbar at the top of the Premiere Elements window, click Capture. The Premiere Elements Capture window appears. You should see the words Capture Device Online at the top of the window. 4. Rewind the tape in your camcorder to the beginning of a section that you want to capture. You may notice that as you play and rewind your camcorder tape, the video image from the camcorder appears in the Capture window. 5. Click the Play button in the Capture window to begin playing the tape, and click the Capture button to start capturing some video. 6. After you've captured a few minutes of video, click the Stop Capture button. 7. Close the Capture window when you're done capturing video.You now see a collection of video clips in the Premiere Elements Media window. These are the video clips that you captured from the camcorder, and they are ready to be used in a movie project. <h2 style="margin:0.25rem 0px 1.25rem;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:18px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">Assembling the movie</h2> After you've captured some video, turning your footage into a movie is easy. Follow these steps: 1. Make sure the Premiere Elements workspace shows the basic editing layout by clicking Edit on the Premiere Elements toolbar. If the workspace seems stubborn and won't change to the basic editing layout, choose Window --> Restore Workspace --> Edit. 2. To preview a clip, double-click it in the Media window. The clip loads into the Monitor window, where you can click the Play button to play the clip. 3. Click-and-drag some clips from the Media window and drop them on the Timeline, as shown in Figure 1. For now, just drop each clip on the track labeled Video 1, and drop the clips one after the other in the Timeline in the order in which you want them to play. 4. One of the formats you can choose is the Windows Media format. To quickly export your movie in Windows Media format: 1. Click Export on the Premiere Elements toolbar, and choose Windows Media from the menu that appears. Alternatively, you can choose File --> Export --> Windows Media. 2. In the Export Windows Media dialog box that appears, choose Cable Modem/DSL in the menu on the left and click OK. The exact format you choose isn't important right now. 3. In the Save File dialog box that appears, choose a location in which to save the file, type a filename for the movie file, and click Save. A Rendering dialog box appears. Rendering is the process that Premiere Elements goes through when it applies your edits and compresses a movie project into its final output format. Rendering may take a few seconds or minutes, depending on the length of your movie and the speed of your computer. 4. When rendering is complete, locate the movie file, and double-click it to open it in Windows Media Player. Congratulations! You've just made your first movie!

However, until recently the process of mastering a DVD movie was complex, and the hardware for recording (a.k.a.burning) DVDs was prohibitively expensive. Thankfully, all that is changing. Apple has been at the forefront of affordable DVD production. Apple released an affordable DVD burner in 2001 called the SuperDrive, and by the middle of 2002 you could buy a SuperDrive-equipped Macintosh for less than $2,000. Prices for blank recordable DVD media have also been falling rapidly, with blank discs now available for less than $10 each. Many other companies have entered the DVD burner fray, and countless drives are now available for both Macintosh and Windows systems for as little as $300. With a DVD burner and the right software you can record your movies onto DVDs, which can then be viewed in nearly any commercial DVD player. Adobe Premiere 6.5 adds new support for DVD that previous versions didn't have. The exact support varies depending on which platform you use to run Premiere: <ul style="padding:0px 1rem;margin:0px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"><li>Macintosh: Premiere 6.5 for Macintosh integrates with Apple's DVD Studio Pro to encode and author DVDs. Timeline markers created in Premiere can be used as chapter references within DVD Studio Pro. To integrate Premiere with DVD Studio Pro, you must purchase that software from Apple.</li> </ul><ul style="padding:0px 1rem;margin:0px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"><li>Windows: Premiere 6.5 for Windows includes an MPEG-2 encoder, which is the video format used by DVD players. The Premiere 6.5 CD also comes with a program called Sonic DVDit! Using this tool, you can export video for almost any medium that uses MPEG-2 video — including DVD. To use Adobe MPEG Export, follow these steps: 1. If you only want to export a portion of the Timeline, slide the ends of the Work Area bar at the top of the Timeline so that only the desired portion of your project is covered by the bar. You may want to do so if your Timeline includes elements for tape export such as a long stretch of black video or a counting leader. 2. Choose File --> Export Timeline --> Adobe MPEG Encoder. The Adobe MPEG Encoder Settings window appears, as shown in Figure 1. <div class="figure" style="margin:0px;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:16px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif"><img border="0" src="http://media.wiley.com/assets/82/74/fg0-7645-1644-2_1412.jpg" style="vertical-align: bottom; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; max-width: 100%; height: auto !important;"></div> Figure 1: Use the new Adobe MPEG Export feature to export your movies for DVD playback. Enter a filename and location for the output file in the appropriately named Filename and Location fields. 6. If you only want to export the Timeline between the in and out points you set in Step 1, choose Work Area from the Export Range menu. If you want to export the whole project, choose Entire Project from the Export Range menu. 7. Click Export. Once installed, you can launch DVDit! LE using the desktop icon created during setup. When you create a new project, you'll be asked to choose a TV Standard (NTSC or PAL) and a video format. If you're creating a DVD, choose MPEG2 (DVD-compliant). The DVDit! LE interface appears, as shown in Figure 2. LE is a DVD authoring program included with Adobe Premiere 6.5. 1. Click the Media button at the bottom of the Theme panel. The Theme panel switches to the Media list, which at this point is probably empty. 2. Click Theme to open the Theme menu and choose Add Files to Theme. A Look In dialog box opens. 3. Browse to the folder that contains your MPEG-2 file and open the file. The file appears in your Media list.4. Click the Backgrounds button to bring the list of backgrounds to the front, and then drag one of the backgrounds to the First Play placeholder. The theme now appears in the main screen and in the First Play placeholder. 5. Click the Text button. A list of fonts appears.6. Drag a font to the main screen area to create a text object. A text object that simply says "Text" appears on the screen. To edit the text, click it once to select it, wait a moment, then click it again. Start typing your text. If you want to add some buttons to the screen, you can click the Buttons button (sorry!) and drag buttons to the screen just as you did with text. As you can see in Figure 2, one button has been created and a text object that says "Play Movie." To adjust the color, size, and other characteristics of text, select the text and choose Effects --> Text Properties. Make sure that any text you add contrasts adequately with the background image. 7. To turn a button or text object into a link, first click the object to select it. A white outline appears around the object to indicate that it is selected. 8. Click the Media button to bring the list of media files to the front, and drag the desired movie file onto the button or text that will serve as a link. 9. Choose File --> Project Settings. The Project Settings dialog box appears.10. Choose the type of disc that you will be using to record the project in the Output Size menu. 11. Review your current project size to ensure that you aren't exceeding the capacity of the disc. The maximum capacity for each Output Size disc type is listed in the dialog box. 12. Click OK to close the Project Settings dialog box. 13. Burn the disc or create a disc image.Use options in the Build menu to either make a DVD using your DVD or CD burner, or create an image by choosing Make DVD Folder. If you create an image, you have a folder on your hard drive (in the location you specified) containing all the files needed to create a DVD. Of course, you'll probably spend a lot more time playing around in DVDit! LE, but this is the basic procedure. You should also check the documentation for your DVD burner; it may have come with additional software to help you author DVDs. And of course, test your DVDs carefully to ensure functionality —before you send them out into the world. If you are creating a master disc image that will be mass produced by someone else, ask the manufacturing facility that you are working with about special formatting requirements and submission procedures before creating a disc image.

Click the Backgrounds button to bring the list of backgrounds to the front, and then drag one of the backgrounds to the First Play placeholder. The theme now appears in the main screen and in the First Play placeholder. 5. Click the Text button. A list of fonts appears.6. Drag a font to the main screen area to create a text object. A text object that simply says "Text" appears on the screen. To edit the text, click it once to select it, wait a moment, then click it again. Start typing your text. If you want to add some buttons to the screen, you can click the Buttons button (sorry!) and drag buttons to the screen just as you did with text. As you can see in Figure 2, one button has been created and a text object that says "Play Movie." To adjust the color, size, and other characteristics of text, select the text and choose Effects --> Text Properties. Make sure that any text you add contrasts adequately with the background image. 7. To turn a button or text object into a link, first click the object to select it. A white outline appears around the object to indicate that it is selected. 8. Click the Media button to bring the list of media files to the front, and drag the desired movie file onto the button or text that will serve as a link. 9. Choose File --> Project Settings. The Project Settings dialog box appears.10. Choose the type of disc that you will be using to record the project in the Output Size menu. 11. Review your current project size to ensure that you aren't exceeding the capacity of the disc. The maximum capacity for each Output Size disc type is listed in the dialog box. 12. Click OK to close the Project Settings dialog box. 13. Burn the disc or create a disc image.Use options in the Build menu to either make a DVD using your DVD or CD burner, or create an image by choosing Make DVD Folder. If you create an image, you have a folder on your hard drive (in the location you specified) containing all the files needed to create a DVD. Of course, you'll probably spend a lot more time playing around in DVDit! LE, but this is the basic procedure. You should also check the documentation for your DVD burner; it may have come with additional software to help you author DVDs. And of course, test your DVDs carefully to ensure functionality —before you send them out into the world. If you are creating a master disc image that will be mass produced by someone else, ask the manufacturing facility that you are working with about special formatting requirements and submission procedures before creating a disc image.

Adobe Creative Suite: Getting Started with InDesign cs

InDesign CS is similar to other Adobe products when it comes to workspace layout and functionality. InDesign works with graphics and word processing programs so that you can use content that's created in a different piece of software and integrate it with InDesign to create a publication. You can use InDesign to create a newsletter, brochure, advertisement, or even a book. These layouts might be for print, or you may want to keep them electronic and distribute your pages online. InDesign enables you to easily accomplish any of these tasks. InDesign documents are saved as.indd files on your hard drive, which are native InDesign documents. After you double-click an .indd document, the InDesign application starts and opens the selected file. <h2 style="margin:0.25rem 0px 1.25rem;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:18px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">Opening InDesign</h2> You can open InDesign in several different ways. Choose one of the following ways to open InDesign:<ul style="padding:0px 1rem;margin:0px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"><li> Double-click the InDesign icon on your desktop.</li></ul><ul style="padding:0px 1rem;margin:0px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"><li>Choose Start --> All Programs --> Adobe InDesign CS (Windows XP) or double-click the InDesign CS icon in your Applications folder (Mac).</li> </ul><ul style="padding:0px 1rem;margin:0px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px"><li>Find an InDesign document (.indd) on your hard drive and double-click the document's title or icon. InDesign starts up automatically and opens the document you chose.</li> </ul><h2 style="margin:0.25rem 0px 1.25rem;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:18px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">Creating a new publication</h2> When you open InDesign for the first time, you need to create a new InDesign document (also referred to as a publication). Just follow these steps to create a new publication: 1. Choose File --> New --> Document.The New Document dialog box opens. 2. Enter a value for the number of pages for the document in the Number of Pages text field. This value can be between 1 and 9999. If you want a text frame on the master page, select the Master Text Frame check box. 3. Select the Facing Pages check box if you want the pages arranged as spreads. With this option checked, the pages in your document are arranged in pairs, so you have spreads, which are facing or adjacent pages in a layout. For example, you would select this option if you're creating a publication that will be arranged like a book. If you deselect this option, pages are arranged individually. 4. Choose a page size for the document from the Page Size drop-down list. Set the page size to the size of the paper you intend to print on or to the desired display size. The Width and Height values below this drop-down list change, depending on the size you choose. 5. Choose Portrait (vertical) or Landscape (horizontal) orientation for the orientation of the pages throughout the document. Click the button on the left for Portrait, or the button on the right for Landscape. A portrait layout is narrow and tall, while a landscape layout is short and wide. 6. Choose a number for the columns on the page. This sets guides for columns that you might put text into. You can also enter a value in the Gutter field (the gutter is the space in between each of the columns). 7. Choose values for the page margins.Notice the Make All Settings the Same button in the middle of the four text fields where you enter the margin values. Click this button to set all margins to the same value. If you see Top, Bottom, Inside, and Outside, you are specifying margins for a page layout that has facing pages (the Facing Pages check box is selected in the dialog box). If you see Top, Bottom, Left, and Right, you are creating a page layout without facing pages. The inside margins refer to the margins at the middle of the spread, and the outside margins refer to the outer left and right margins. The Inside setting can be set to accommodate the binding of a book. 8. When you're finished, click OK. If you're going to use the same settings over and over, saving those settings as a preset is a good idea. Click the Save Preset button in the New Document dialog box after making your settings. Enter a name for the preset, and then click OK. After you save your settings, you can select the settings from the Document Preset drop-down list whenever you create a new document. After you click OK in the New Document dialog box, the new document is created with the settings you just specified. <h2 style="margin:0.25rem 0px 1.25rem;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:18px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">Opening an existing publication</h2> You might have InDesign files on your hard drive that you created or have saved from another source. To open existing InDesign documents (*.indd), follow these steps: 1. Choose File --> Open.The Open dialog box appears. 2. Browse through your hard drive and select a file to open. Select a file by clicking the document's title. To select more than one document, press Ctrl (the Command key on the Mac) while you click the filename. 3. Click the Open button to open the file. The file opens in the workspace.<h2 style="margin:0.25rem 0px 1.25rem;padding:0px;border:0px;font-size:18px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">Looking at the document setup</h2> If you need to change the size of your pages or the number of pages in a document that is already open in the workspace, you can make those changes in the Document Setup dialog box. To access and modify settings in the Document Setup dialog box, follow these steps: 1. Choose File --> Document Setup. The Document Setup dialog box opens.2. Change the value in the Number of Pages text field if you need the number of pages in your document to be greater or less than the current value. The number of pages in your document updates after you close this dialog box. 3. Change the size of the page by selecting a new option from the Page Size drop-down list, or manually enter values into the Width and Height text fields. You can also click the up and down arrows in the Width and Height text fields to choose a new value. 4. Change the page orientation by clicking the Portrait or the Landscape button. The page orientation updates in the workspace after you exit this dialog box. 5. Click OK when you're finished changing your document setup. <h1 style="font-size:20px;margin:0.25rem 0px;padding:0px 0px 0.5rem;border-width:0px 0px 1px;border-bottom-style:solid;border-bottom-color:rgb(204,204,204);color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif">The modifications are applied to the currently open document.</h1> <h1 style="font-size:20px;margin:0.25rem 0px;padding:0px 0px 0.5rem;border-width:0px 0px 1px;border-bottom-style:solid;border-bottom-color:rgb(204,204,204);color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif"> </h1>
